Medical or Anatomical Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient dry needling technique using very fine sterile needles inserted into the body tissues that help reduce pain and inflammation while improving function and mobility.

Medical or anatomical acupuncture is a dry needling technique that blends the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western Medicine. The traditional acupuncture approach is based on Meridians, which are pathways along the body that sustain blood flow and energy. Needles are placed along specific meridians to relieve pain and inflammation thereby increasing function and mobility. The anatomical approach uses these principles but the needle placement is selected based on the location of the injury or pain, rather than the meridian alone.

Physiologically, the needles stimulate sensors in our body that send signals to the spinal cord and brain which then causes a release of the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals and anti-inflammatory hormones.

Maggie Phillips-Scarlett is certified in Anatomical Acupuncture through the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute: acupuncturecanada.org
